In undertaking the 6-8,000 word ‘special study’ a number of journeys were made using rail travel and the intentional disorientation in unfamiliar places. Working to tight timetables it was imperative to negotiate around the urban areas and discover what hints and clues signified the presence of the railway station within the towns and cities visited. Photographic records were kept alongside sketched observations. The work was then presented as a series of journeys pointing to a criteria of useful architectural features without suggesting an ‘ideal’ or homogeneous ‘solution’ to this particular building type.
